(THE SUBJECT of communication is certainly not an uncovere...)
THE SUBJECT of communication is certainly not an uncovered nor a neglected field of study, and the literature seems resplendent to cover most aspects of this very vital part of our lives. However, the authors hold very strong beliefs regarding two relevant points that form the basis for this book and, in fact, prompted the authors to write it. The first point is that law enforcement has, as its very core and "raison d'etre," the awesome responsibility of protecting the citizenry in both life and property, in addition to maintaining peace and good order in our society. The second point, really an extension of the first, is that everything that the law enforcement officer does either employs or is accomplished through and/ or by the utilization of effective communication. While this book is intended primarily for use in and by law enforcement, we believe it certainly will hold value for any person in any profession or walk of life. The authors believe, after searching the existing literature, that insufficient focus has been directed to law enforcement exclusively as it relates to the field of communication. It is, therefore, the intent and purpose of this book to provide for law enforcement officers a textbook that can aid in the improvement of all of their communication activities, especially oral communication. By improving the quality of the communication of law enforcement, we believe that the quality of law enforcement will also be improved.
