Background
Kaplan, Morton A. was born on May 9, 1921 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. Son of Lewis J. and Anthea (Ginsberg) Kaplan.
( First published in 1957, System and Process combines sy...)
First published in 1957, System and Process combines systems, game, and cybernetic concepts in its theoretical formulations. Since its publication, serious research in international relations has needed to respond to the bold hypotheses that matched equilibrial rules with type of system. Kaplan's life-long interest in finding an objective basis for moral judgments had its scholarly origins in an appendix of this classical book, which incorporated his understanding of philosophy and, in particular, the philosophy of science. A second appendix on 'The Mechanisms of Regulation' explored the cybernetic and recursive nature of knowing.

( A selection of essays by a pioneer in the application o...)
A selection of essays by a pioneer in the application of systems theory to political analysis, Macropolitics develops the author's concern with the philosophical foundations of political science, and with the extension of philosophical principles into the realm of empirical analysis. For this volume, Kaplan has written a long essay on the philosophical foundations of his work, which constitutes one of his most important statements. He develops and explains within a philosophical context his contention that values can be treated in an empirically meaningful fashion. Organized to expand or illustrate the major points raised in this introduction, the essays that follow deal with such topics as the nature and utility of systems theory, empirical treatment of historical explanations, the systemic and psychological foundations of values, and empirical applications of systems theory in analyzing international political systems. Enlarging the dialogue between conflicting viewpoints, Kaplan exposes the common roots of Western scientific thought and Marxist philosophy, emphasizing that both status quo and revolutionary philosophies are one-sided. In his new introduction, Ira Sharkansky sees this as a truly groundbreaking work: "thanks in considerable part to the contributions of Professor Kaplan, international relations theory is a major component of political sciencei?1/2a milestone on our quest for understanding i?1/2 a distinguished part of the ongoing record." When the book first appeared, William Welch in the American Political Science Review called it "excellent: his weighing against the evidence of competing hypotheses is truly exemplary i?1/2 thorough, careful, fair-minded."

(The study of human afairs reveals a most intimate, and in...)
The study of human afairs reveals a most intimate, and indeed an ineluctable, relationship between law and politics. The significance of The Political Foundations of International Law lies in its perceptive exploration of this relationship in the sphere of modern international law and legal institutions. It is the joint effort of a lawyer and a political scientist who have combined their knowledge and skills in order to show how international law responds to and in turn influences the course of international politics.

(Many scientific developments of the twentieth century (th...)
Many scientific developments of the twentieth century (the Heisenberg "Uncertainty" principle, for example) have suggested that the universe is disorderly, chaotic, and irrational. Consequently, humankind began to find itself without a "natural" place in the universe. If humans bear no significant relationship to other parts of the universe, must we conclude the existence is meaningless? Science, Language and the Human Condition disputes such a conclusion. Morton A. Kaplan develops an integration of philosophy of science and the theory of language. He argues that if we understand the nature of knowledge, language, and science, and how all relate to one another and to objective reality, then we will understand our place in the universe. Kaplan uses rigorous analytical tools to explore the complementary weakneses of pairs of major thinkers: Kuhn and Popper, Quine and Kripke, Wittgenstein and Derrida, and Karl Marx and Milton Friedman. The strengths of their conflicting approaches are reassembled here, for the first time, into a consistent world view. Kaplan argues that every method of inquiry, including inquiry into language, requires supplementation by complementary approaches. He calls his approach "analytical pragmatism." Philosophers, scientists, social scientists, and humanists will discover important implications for understanding the persistent problems of how we acquire knowledge, language, and values.
