1896-1899 studied at Repin’s workshop, Saint St. Petersburg Academy of Arts.
1899 expelled from Academy and exiled to Tiflis for participating in student demonstrations. 1922-1929 founder-director, People's Art Studio, Tbilisi. 1930-1953 professor and head, Chair of Painting, Tbilisi Academy of Arts.
In his early period toyed with Classicism and Impressionism, then switched to realism and socialist realism.
Member, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Arts from 1947.
