Educated at Gaborone, then qualified at Teachers’ Training College at Kanyo.
He began teaching in 1947 and rose to be an assistant master at St Joseph’s College, Khale and head teacher at Batlokwa National School. After his election to Batlokwa Tribal Council in 1961 he went to Zambia to study the unified teaching service and make recommendations to the tribal council.
He entered the Assembly on March 1, 1965, and became Parliamentary Secretary the following month. In October 1966 just after independence he was appointed Assistant Minister of Finance. A year later he was promoted Minister of Finance and played an important part in negotiating a revised customs agreement with South Africa in 1969. After his re-election in October 1969 he was transferred to be Minister of Commerce, Industry and Water Affairs.
Patient with problems and people, he has built up a reputation as a good listener before any decision is taken. As a former teacher he is admired for the care he takes to get his facts right.
