Motoaki Kanze was well read and a versatile player who undertook to revise and improve the dialogues of Noh dramas. This reformation which he undertook with the help of scholars came to be called "Improvement of Meiwa Era" (1764-1772), but this new style declined with his death as the grammatically correct dialogues were too strait-laced and found unsuitable for the diction of players.
