After graduation she worked as a housemaid, a primary school teacher before she became a reporter of the Hochi Shimbun, the first woman journalist in Japan. She started the Fujinrno-tomo (Women's Friend), a monthly magazine and founded the Jiyu Gakuen Girls' School.
Goro Hani, noted publicist, is her son-in-law.
