Background

Motonari Nakayama was born in 1818 in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Was born to a rich family.

Was elected to the board of directors of the newly established Central Tea Industry Association, 1884.

Motonari brought teachers of tea culture from Uji, noted tea-growing region near Kyoto, to improve the local method of growing and refining tea. In the great famine of 1836, he bought all tea leaves that had been abandoned in the area and hired destitute folks to process them.
