Hara Motoroki served Lord Naganori Asano as chief of ashigaru (footmen), receiving a fief of 300 koku of rice. When Lord Naganori was ordered by the Shogun to commit harakiri for his attempt to stab Yoshinaka (Kozuke) Kira in Edo Castle, Mototoki who was in Edo at the time hastened to Ako (Hyogo Prefecture) to report the incident. After the 47 loyal retainers accomplished the famed vendetta, they all committed harakiri at the Shogun's order. Mototoki's mother killed herself soon before he committed harakiri.
