Motosuke Kiyohara was one of the master waka poets of his time among the five who were referred to as "Five Men of Nashitsubo". In his lifetime he served three Emperors: Murakami, Reizei and Enyu, and is said to be one of the compilers of Gosen-wakashu (A Collection of Waka Poems). Motosuke was later appointed Lord of Higo.
