Background
Motosuke Nomura was born on the 26th of June, 1842. He was second son Tomenosuke Arichi, a retainer of the Choshii Clan (Yamaguchi Prefecture).

Motosuke Nomura was born on the 26th of June, 1842. He was second son Tomenosuke Arichi, a retainer of the Choshii Clan (Yamaguchi Prefecture).
Motosuke Nomura studied Chinese classics under Toin Shionoya and became director of the Meirinkan School of his clan. In 1869 he was appointed a councilor of the clan and subsequently traveled abroad to inspect the state of affairs in the West.
After returning to Japan, Motosuke Nomura served in various posts of the government and was appointed a member of the Senate in 1880 and later of the House of Peers.
Motosuke Nomura was well known as a calligrapher.
