Career
A resident in Kozuke (Gumma Prefecture), he was well-known like Sogo Sakura for his act of self-sacrifice for the sake of the public. Because people under Lord Nobunao Sanada of Numata, Kozuke, was persecuted by heavy taxes and the lord’s misrule, Mozaemon proceeded to Edo with an appeal to the Shogun. In February 1681, he filed the petition with the Shogun through Prince Rinnoji. As a result of his petition, Lord Nobunao had his fief confiscated by the Shogunate. Mozaemon, however, was arrested in his native place and was crucified on the bank of the Tone River.
