Educated at Zombode national school and then in South Africa at Lovedale Institute, Alice, 45 miles north of Grahamstown in Cape Province. The first Swazi to matriculate at the University College of Fort Hare, in 1932 he became a revenue clerk in 1935 at Mankaiana, 25 miles south-west of Mbabane, and continued his studies to achieve a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of South Africa in 1940.
In April 1950 he was appointed the first Swazi Administrative Officer and was Swaziland’s first Establishment Officer. At the coronation of Queen Elizabeth in England in 1953 he was ADC to King Sobhuza II. He also attended the constitutional conference in London in 1963. Three years later he retired from government service and took on the job of clerk to the Legislative Council. He graduated to be Speaker at the first session of Parliament under the self-governing constitution on May 8, 1967. After independence he became Swaziland’s first ambassador to the United States.
Highly respected educationist, parliamentarian and diplomat. After 30 years in government service at home he switched to international politics and earned a reputation for straightforward speaking and honest judgment.
