Muhammad was born of a Persian family on July 21, 810, in Bukhara, Uzbekistan.
He studied the Islamic traditions at the age of eleven, and at sixteen he made a pilgrimage to Mecca. Al-Bukhari then went to Egypt, and from there to Asia. In the course of his travels, which lasted sixteen years, he collected more than 300,000 traditions concerning the acts and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad and his companions. These he proceeded to sift, separating the true ones from the false. His most famous work was Al Djami al-Sahehal-Sahih ("Collection of the True"), in which more than 7,000 genuine traditions were collected and arranged in an elaborate chapter scheme. This book was meant to serve as the basis for a complete system of jurisprudence. The SahehSahih came to be regarded as one of the most sacred books of Islam. Al-Bukhari died at Kartank, near Samarkand, on Aug. 31, 870. His grave became a place of pilgrimage for the faithful of Islam.
