Hunayn Ibn Ishaq (80973), one of the most prolific early medieval translators of classical works, rendered hundreds of Greek volumes into Syriac and Arabic. This treatise on his Galen translations illuminates Ishaqs efforts and their ninth-century context while recognizing that the translation movement had actually begun centuries earlier with Christians, Jews, and others. Offering the definitive Arabic text with a modern English translation and apparatus, this volume will be essential for anyone interested in the transmission of knowledge in the Late Antique and early Islamic Middle East.

Ibn Ishaq was born on 704 in Medina, Saudi Arabia, the grandson of a Christian man of Kufa, by the name of Yasār. His father's name was Isḥāq.
Ibn Ishaq lived in Medina, where he interested himself to such an extent in the details of the Prophet's life that he was attacked by those to whom his work seemed to have a rationalistic tendency. He consequently left Medina in 733, and went to Alexandria, then to Kufa and Hira, and finally to Bagdad, where the caliph Mansur provided him with the means of writing his great work. This was the Life of the Apostle of God, which is now lost and is known to us only in the recension of Ibn Hisham. The work has been attacked by Arabian writers as untrustworthy, and it seems clear that he introduced forged verses. It remains, however, one of the most important works of the age. Ibn Isḥaq wrote several works. His major work is al-Mubtadaʾ wa al-Baʿth wa al-Maghāzī - the Kitab al-Mubtada and Kitab al-Mab'ath both survive in part, particularly al-Mab'ath, in ibn Hisham and al-Mubtada otherwise in substantial fragments. He is also credited with the lost works Kitāb al-kh̲ulafāʾ, which al-Umawwī related to him and a book of Sunan. Ibn Ishaq died in 761.
