Background
Major General Muhammad Nawaz was born in Chiniot, District Jhang and he received his early education there.

Due to his meritorious service, he was awarded the Hilal e Imtiaz (Military) by the Government of Pakistan. Nawaz was accepted into the Pakistan Military Academy (Kakul) in 1978 in the 61st PMA Long Course. After successful completion of Military Training from Pakistan Military Academey Kakul he was awarded commission in the Pakistan Army on 27 March 1980, and was inducted into the 14 Frontier Force Regiment.
He has also obtained his Bachelor of Science in War Studies from Command and Staff College, Quetta.
He also attended National Defence University, Islamabad where he holds a Master of Science degree in War Studies. Apart from active service with his own Regiment 14 FF, he Commanded 31 Infantry Brigade.
He had also held various Staff Appointment as Brigade Major of 44 IMBG, Staff Officer Headquarters PAP MODA at Saudi Arabia, Deputy Director General at Dte General Inter-Services Intelligence and Doctorate&Associate of Arts Pakistan Embassy at Tehran (Iran). He was promoted to the Rank of Major General on 8 August 2008.
After promotion to the rank of Major General he was posted as General Officer Commanding 40th Infantry Division, Okara and later on as Director General Punjab Rangers.
While he was on duty and traveling in his official helicopter on a military assignment, the chopper experienced technical problems and crashed in the Indus River. Nawaz, along with cabin crew, died on the spot. He was buried in his native town Chiniot with full military honor.
