Mukhtar Aymakhanov was educated at Chernigov Higher Military Aviation School for Pilots granting the qualifications of «Engineer Pilot». In 2002 he graduated from School of Law «Adilet» as a lawyer. In 2009 he graduated from Academy of Civil Service of the President of the Russian Federation with the qualifications of economist.
From 1988 to 1993 he served in the Air Forces as a fighter pilot. Then he took different positions on the Kazakh Stock Exchange, at JSC «The Central Asian Depositary System “Altyn-kazna”», LLP «Terminal», LLP «MAAGBOL», LLP «Altyn-Consalt» until 2003. From 2009 to 2014 he was a research fellow of S.I.Vavilov Institute for the History of Science and Technology.
In May 2003 he was enlisted as a test-cosmonaut candidate in The Yuri A. Gagarin State Scientific Research-and-Testing Cosmonaut Training Center. From June 16, 2003 to June 27, 2005 he took a course of general space training, passed state exams (grade «excellent»). In 2005 he has been granted qualification of «Test Cosmonaut». Now he takes training in a specialization and improvement group.
He is married, and has a son and a daughter.
