Munechika Sanjo was born about 987 in Kyoto, Japan.
Munechika Sanjo founder of the Sanjo school of sword making. He made noted swords including Kogitsunemaru owned by Yorinaga Fujiwara, Minister of the Left, and Mikazuki Munechika and Takanosu Sanjo.
His many disciples included Yoshiie, Arikuni and Kanenaga Gojd. Myoju Umetada, who was a well-known swordsmith in Kyoto in the 16th Century, was said to be a descendant of Munechika 25 generations removed.
