Background
Muraku Asanebo was born in 1777 in Japan. There are nine generations of the same name, of which the first and seventh are noted.

Career
Muraku was Shimbe Satomi, who was an apprentice at a pawnbroker's shop in Yedo. Fond of Joruri, or ballad drama, he became a disciple of Miyatodayu Toyotake, a joruri reciter, before he turned to story-telling. His stage name as joruri reciter was Toshidayu. A disciple of Karaku Sanshotei I, comic story-teller, he adopted the stage name of Muraku Sanshotei. Later he fell out with Karaku and called himself Muraku Asanebo. (Asanebo means a lie-a-bed).
