Mason was a grandson of George Mason, author of the Virginia Bill of Rights and Founding Father of the United States.

Prior to 1861, Mason was employed by the United States Navy and served as a captain. Between 1861 and 1865, Mason served as a lieutenant in the Confederate States Navy during the American Civil War. Mason died on 11 January 1875 in Alexandria, Virginia at age 67.
His body was interred at Christ Church Cemetery in Alexandria.
