(This is the first book Madalyn Murray O'Hair ever wrote. ...)
This is the first book Madalyn Murray O'Hair ever wrote. It is composed of transcripts of her landmark 1968 Atheist radio broadcasts made under the aegis of the Society of Separationists, the parent organization from which American Atheists Inc. later developed. This corrected new edition allows you to join Madalyn as she expounds upon an avalanche of theological and political topics: government giveaways of property to churches; the real 'religious foundations' of the United States; the philosophical and historical foundations of Atheism; Atheist thinkers and writers of various epochs; the dozens, not legions, of Christian martyrs put to death in antiquity; errors and absurdities of the Bible; and more.

(An Atheist Epic tells the dramatic story of how fourteen-...)
An Atheist Epic tells the dramatic story of how fourteen-year-old William J. Muray III and his mother Madalyn Murray (later O'Hair) challenged the compulsory recitation of the Lord's Prayer and forced reading of the Christian Bible in the public schools of Baltimore. It tells of the beatings young Bill received with the approval of school authorities, police, and courts, and of the attacks on the Murray home instigated and led by good Christians -- attacks that led quite directly to the fatal heart attack suffered by Mrs. Murray's father. It describes the Christian execution of little Garth's kitten and the sorry demise of the two 'Atheist dogs' that Bill and Garth had as companions after loss of the kitten. Virtually all the religious atacks upon the First Amendment-mandated separation of state and church that America has endured since 1963 have been in retaliation to 'Murray v. Curlett' -- the case that Madalyn successfully took all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court to obtain the ruling that forced prayer and Bible reading were unconstitutional. The improbable series of events that led to that decision are painted here in colorful detail.

Madalyn Murray O'Hair was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States on April 13, 1919; the daughter of Lena Christina (nee Scholle) and John Irwin Mays.
In 1936, she graduated from Rossford High School in Rossford, Ohio. In 1949, Murray completed a bachelor's degree from Ashland University.
Although School Board of Abbington Township v. Schempp is usually cited as the case through which the Supreme Court ruled that public schools may not require Bible reading, the second decision on that issue was a case filed in 1959 by O'Hair and her son, William J. Murray (Murray v. Curlett). The decision was handed down in 1963. As atheists they protested the Baltimore school board's requirement that the public school day begin with prayer or Bible reading. Murray attracted notoriety by organizing the American Atheist Center (1959), American Atheists, Inc. (1965), and the Society of Separationists (1965). O'Hair's younger son, Jon Garth Murray, and her granddaughter, Robin Murray O'Hair, helped her run the Center.
She had a talent for attracting attention as, for example, when she issued statements that she planned to sue to stop governments from giving tax exemptions to places of public worship and other religious organizations. She also announced she would sue to remove the phrase "In God We Trust" from the currency.
After being arrested for attacking Baltimore police, she fled to Hawaii and eventually settled in Austin, Texas, where she and her new husband established the American Atheist Center. During the 1960's the American Atheist Press published the first five of O'Hair's more than twenty-five books on the subject of atheism, including Why I Am an Atheist (1965).
In August of 1995, at the age of 76, O'Hair mysteriously disappeared along with her son Jon and her adopted daughter Robin. According to a December 1995 issue of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the IRS seeks to recover $750, 00 in back taxes from her son and daughter. However, the American Atheists news service, which was started by O'Hair, continually repudiated all rumors of her reason for disappearing. The organization has failed to release any information leading to her discovery. Then in December 1996 more than $600, 000 vanished from the American Atheists Inc. organization, which was controlled by O'Hair. While some believe O'Hair went somewhere secret to die to avoid having "religionists" pray over her body, others question whether she took the missing money. Despite investigations, the answer to these questions, as well as O'Hair's whereabouts, remained a mystery. But later it was found, that the three were kidnapped, forced them to withdraw the missing funds, gone on several huge shopping sprees and killed by David Roland Waters, a convicted felon on parole and his accomplices Gary Paul Karr and Danny Fry. David Roland Waters had worked as a typesetter and later office manager for American Atheists, stealing $54, 000 from the organisation. Shortly after his theft was discovered, O'Hair wrote an article on him, where she reported the theft and Waters' previous crimes. This was enough to sentence Waters to prison for eight years, so he decided to kill the offender.
