1990Sperber has written a series of books in which he challenges the role of collegiate athletics on university campuses. He contends that the rise of athletic programs has siphoned money from academic programs while promoting a huge undergraduate "party scene" in lieu of a meaningful and useful education.
Sperber publicized the view that a majority of college students, many of them unmotivated, are offered a substandard education that brings with it the "reward" of drinking parties and attendance at high-profile sporting events. He has documented the perennial scandals that rock this billion-dollar industry, from the players bought off by overzealous alumni to the fudged test scores for jocks who can’t read.
Murray Sperber is a member of the American Association of University Professors.
Murray Sperber married Aneta Elizabeth Wharry on March 23, 1966. Their marriage produced two children - Giselle and Oliver.
