Safanie, Murray D. was born on September 30, 1899 in New York City. Son of Andre and Sara (Manzell) Safanie.


Educated New York University School of Commerce and extension courses.


Successively stenographer, secretary, business executive, 1913-1918. Auditor Arthur Young & Company, James Barr & Company, 1918-1920. Accountant and assistant comptroller, A. H. Bull Steamship Company, 1920-1922.

Special auditor United States Treasury, Washington, 1922. Special examnier United States Steel Corporation taxes for war years, 1922-1925. Security analyst and statistician, Shearson, Hammill & Company, Inc., since 1926, later head investment department, partner, since 1936, managing partner, 1947-1957, directing partner, since 1957, chairman of the executive committee.
