1931 graduate Lit Faculty, Moscow State University.
1919 first work published. 1931-1935 ed, Tatar periodicals "Young Comrades” and "Child of October". From 1935 lit director, Opera Studio, Moscow Conservatory.
Later lit director, Kazan’ Opera House (1953 named for him). 1939-1941 exec secretary, Tatar Writers’ Union. From 1941 in Soviet Army.
1942 seriously wounded, taken prisoner by the German army and interned in concentration camp, where he organized an underground group, managed escapes of POW’s, etc-.
Wrote the libretti for Zhiganov’s opera Altynchech (The Golden Haired Woman), and Iidar. Gravely wounded, prisoner of war, 1942. Inmate at a Nazi concentration camp.
Executed for underground activities. Wrote poems in prison in Moabit, collected into the Moabitskaia Tetrad, which served as the libretto for an opera. Poems set to music by several composers.
Made a Hero of the Soviet Union. Lenin Prize (posthumously), 1957.
Communist Party member from 1929.
