"Dokkodo" was largely composed on the occasion of Musashi giving away his possessions in preparation for death, and was dedicated to his favorite disciple, who took them to heart. "Dokkodo" expresses a stringent, honest, and ascetic view of life.

Musashi Miyamoto learnt the art of fencing from his father. Soon became a master fencer, and it is said that in his career he fought 60 duels without losing one of them, in spite of the fact that he crossed swords with such masters as Kempo Yoshioka in Kyoto and Ganryu Sasaki in Buzen.
In his final years authored The Book of Five Rings (五輪の書 Go Rin No Sho), and Dokkōdō (The Path of Aloneness).
