Founder members of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Legislative Party (Doctorate.M.K.) 1949, Treasure 1961, Deputy Leader 1968, Leader since 1969. Founder-editor of the Tamil daily organ of the Doctorate.M.K. Murasoli. Represented Kulittalai in State Assembly 1957-1962, Thanjavur 1962-1967, Saidapet 1968.
Led the Kallakkudi Agitation and wras imprisoned for six months.
Former Minister of Public Works. Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu (Madras) 1969-1976 (presidential rule imposed), 1989-1990.
Thamizha Veil (Patron of Tamil), Association of Research Scholars in Tamil 1971. Honorary Doctor of Letters (Annamalai University, Tamil Nadu) 1971.
