(Eliza Naumann, a seemingly unremarkable nine-year-old, ex...)
Eliza Naumann, a seemingly unremarkable nine-year-old, expects never to fit into her gifted family: her autodidact father, Saul, absorbed in his study of Jewish mysticism; her brother, Aaron, the vessel of his father's spiritual ambitions; and her brilliant but distant lawyer-mom, Miriam. But when Eliza sweeps her school and district spelling bees in quick succession, Saul takes it as a sign that she is destined for greatness. In this altered reality, Saul inducts her into his hallowed study and lavishes upon her the attention previously reserved for Aaron, who in his displacement embarks upon a lone quest for spiritual fulfillment. When Miriam's secret life triggers a familial explosion, it is Eliza who must order the chaos.

In Time's Magpie, Myla Goldberg explores Prague where centuries-old buildings have become receptacles for Western values, and a generation defined by the Communist regime coexists with a generation for whom Communism is a rapidly fading memory. Wander through the narrow alleyways and cobblestone streets to places most tourists never see - to a neighborhood eerily transformed by the devastating flood of 2002; to an anachronistic amusement park that is home to a discomfiting array of Technicolor confections; and to the cabinets of curiosity in the Strahov Monastery, where hidden among deceptively modest displays of butterfly specimens and ladies' fans are creatures that defy the laws of taxidermy.

Leaders of a mercurial clique of girls, Celia and Djuna reigned mercilessly over their three followers. One afternoon, they decided to walk home along a forbidden road. Djuna disappeared, and for twenty years Celia blocked out how it happened. The lie Celia told to conceal her misdeed became the accepted truth: everyone assumed Djuna had been abducted, though neither she nor her abductor was ever found. Celia's unconscious avoidance of this has meant that while she and her longtime boyfriend, Huck, are professionally successful, they've been unable to move forward, their relationship falling into a rut that threatens to bury them both.

Myla Goldberg was born in 1972, in Maryland, United States. As a girl, she fantasized about becoming a published writer. She has been interested in Eastern Europe since childhood.
Myla Goldberg attended Eleanor Roosevelt High School. She received a Bachelor of Arts from Oberlin College in 1993.
After graduating, Myla Goldberg lived in Prague for a year, teaching English and working on a novel about an eastern European circus at the dawn of World War II. After Prague, she transplanted to Brooklyn. She managed to fit in time for writing while working as a freelance reader, reviewing book reports to decide whether or not the material was TV-movie worthy. Goldberg also spent time as a production assistant on the set of a Stephen King horror movie and as an employee at a literary agency. She said her first novel was never published and that she still has hundreds of rejection letters she accrued in the process of sending out manuscripts and having them returned.
Goldberg's first novel, Bee Season (2000), is not merely a coming-of-age story, but a delicate examination of the unraveling fabric of one family. The Naumann family consists of siblings Eliza and Aaron and their parents. Their father is a cantor devoted to the study of Jewish mysticism; their mother is a practicing lawyer without whom the family would probably starve. Aaron is a gifted sixteen-year-old whose father hopes will follow in his footsteps and become a scholar, while nine-year-old Eliza is an average student of whom no one expects much. Eliza suddenly finds herself the focus of her father's attention and love when she takes first place in a district and then a state spelling competition. Aaron becomes jealous and rebels by becoming involved with the Hare Krishnas. Meanwhile, hardworking Miriam goes on a crime spree for which she is arrested and committed to a mental institution. As the family falls apart, Aaron finds the courage to declare his intentions to follow his path, and Eliza risks losing the affection of her demanding father when she finds her voice and uses it. What looks on the surface to be a tragedy for the Naumann family turns out to be exhilarating and emancipating for its members.
Myla Goldberg got the idea for Bee Season when she read an essay about how spelling bees prolong the act of losing. She then, coincidentally, had dinner with a friend who regaled her with stories of her own experiences in a family dedicated to spelling bees. In an interview with Laura Buchwald of Boldtype, Goldberg explained, "She was telling me these stories, and I was simultaneously fascinated and repulsed. Eventually, that clicked with Jewish mysticism, which has been a semi-obsession of mine for quite some time...One morning I woke up and the two ideas had combined." One of the highlights of the novel that is consistently praised is the realistic voice of nine-year-old Eliza. In an interview with Linda M. Castellitto, Goldberg mused: "The good voice has in part to do with the fact I haven't quite figured out I'm a grownup yet. I remember very clearly what it was like to be a child." In researching her book, Goldberg attended the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
Goldberg's book The False Friend (2010) is an astonishingly complex drama with a simple setup: two eleven-year-old girls, best friends, and fierce rivals go into the woods and only one comes out. Deeply resonant and emotionally charged, The False Friend explores the complexities of moral judgment, the fallibility of memory, and the adults that children become - leading readers to question the truths that people accept or reject, and the lies to which people ultimately succumb. Goldberg's other novels include Time's Magpie (2004), Wicket's Remedy (2005), Catching the Moon (2007), and Feast Your Eyes (2019).
Myla Goldberg is a contributor of short stories to literary journals and anthologies, including Post Road 3, Aboutface, 2001. Her short stories have appeared in Harper's and McSweeney's. She teaches in the fiction programs of Sarah Lawrence College and Brooklyn College and leads writing workshops in and around New York City.
Goldberg is also an accomplished amateur musician. She plays the banjo and accordion in a Brooklyn-based indie rock quartet, The Walking Hellos. She performed with The Galerkin Method and the Bindlestiff Family Cirkus. She formerly collaborated with the New York art collective Flux Factory. She has contributed song lyrics to the musical group One Ring Zero.

2010Myla Goldberg fells writing like a job: for her, it's very important to look at it as a responsibility. She treats with respect criticism, but, in her opinion, the only way to responsibly give criticism is to put a name and a face behind it and have it be a person-to-person transaction. She doesn't read Amazon and Goodreads reviews.
Quotations: "Criticism is the foundation of the writing process, and it's never easy, but it's essential. The key is to find people who can give you constructive criticism so you're not feeling torn down when you're getting the feedback."
Myla Goldberg is married to Jason Little, a cartoonist. They have two daughters.
