GRIGOR’YEV, N. was born in 1878.
During World War 1 on active service. 1918 supported Ukraine Centr Rada government. Spring 1919 transferred allegiance to Soviets.
18 February 1919 appointed commander, 1st Transport-Dnieper Ukraine Soviet Brigade, subsequently reformed as the 6th Soviet Ukraine Division. March-April 1919 fought with this div in the battles for Nikolaycv, Kherson and Odessa. Early May 1919 moved with his div near Yelizavetgrad.
7-9 May 1919 disobeyed order to transfer div to Rumanian Front to support Hungarian Soviet Republic and raised a rebellion behind the Red Army lines with his army of 20,000 men, 50 pieces of artillery and 10 armored trains. This army, which was manned by Ukraine peasants and staffed by leftist Ukraine Socialist-Revolutionaries, fought under the slogans ’’Power to the Soviets of the Ukraine People Without the Communists” and "The Ukraine for the Ukrainians”. The rebels seized large areas of territory between the Dnieper and Southern Bug, including the towns of Cherkassy, Uman’, Kremenchug, Yekaterinoslav, Yelizavetgrad, Kherson and Nikolayev.
In many towns the garrisons joined Grigor’yev without a fight. The rebel army refused, however, to enlist manual and office workers and was supported by the peasantry, which was dissatisfied by the food and land policies of the Soviet regime. Grigor’yev supported the leftist Ukraine Socialist-Revolutionaries (activists) and the Social-Democratic activists.
Late May 1919 the rebellion was put down by Red Army units under the command of K. Ye. Voroshilov, P. Ye. Dybenko, A. I. Yegorov, M. K. Levandovskiy, A. Ya. Parkhomenko, etc; Grigor’yev escaped to the headquarters of Ataman Makhno, who killed him.
Religion divides people, and is a cause of numerous wars and conflicts throughout the human history.
The emphasis on peaceful coexistence doesn’t mean that the Soviet Union accepted a static world with clear lines. Socialism is inevitable and the "correlations of forces" were moving towards socialism.
