Dr. N. L. Han was born in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, China.

Dr. Han went to the United States in 1904 in connection with the Chinese exhibit at the Exposition held at St. Louis and while there took special courses at the Jones Commercial College, at the same time studying American express transportation systems.
Upon returning to China Dr. Han founded the China Express Company of Shanghai which was the first express company started in China. The Chinese public accepted the express system introduced by Mr. Han who was also the first Chinese to organize the express parcels delivery system in China. As Transportation Officer of the Republican forces he played an important Tole during the first Revolution of 1911 and for meritorious services rendered was awarded a “Chiaho” decoration by the Chinese government.
As a public spirited citizen Dr. Han was interested in various religious and social activities, he was a director of St. Luke’s Hospital. National Committee, Y. M. C. A.’s of China, the Shanghai Y. M. C. A Chants Academy and a member of commercial and guild organizations and several important clubs of Shanghai.
