Hakim qualified as a medical doctor from Paris Descartes University - Cochin Portuguese Royal in 1984 as Laureate of the Faculty of Medicine. Hakim further specialised by undertaking a Gastrointestinal Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, and subsequently, a Transplant Fellowship at the University of Minnesota. After appointment as a consultant at Street Mary"s Hospital, London he successfully started the first Pancreas Transplant Program in South East England.
In 1998, Hakim represented Britain in the international team which performed the world"s first arm transplant in Lyon.

He was awarded Honorary Professorships from Lyon University (2005), Ricardo Palma University, Başkent University, University of São Paulo (2007) and was visiting professor at several institutions worldwide including Harvard University and the Cleveland Clinic. He is currently Adjunct Professor of Transplantation Surgery at Imperial College London.
Past President of the Transplantation Section of the Royal Society of Medicine. He was appointed as the first recipient of the Max Thorek Professorship of Surgery.
He was the 35th President of the International College of Surgeons.

Hakim has published over 150 peer-reviewed papers and has written/edited 21 textbooks in the field of General, Transplant and Bariatric surgery. He was Editor in Chief of International Surgery from 2000–2011, and is currently its Editor Emeritus.
Hakim also sits on the editorial boards of Transplantation Proceedings, Graft, and Experimental and Clinical Transplantation.
