Specialized in comparative psychology. 1913 established a psychological laboratory at Darwin Museum, where she did most of her research. From 1945 senior associate, Institute of Philosophy, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences.
Did research on higher forms of adaptive activity in primates. Devised “specimen sampling’’ method to study the cognitive abilities of chimpanzees. Used “problem cage” method to study habit formation in the lower apes.
Made a comparative analysis of the behavior of chimpanzees and infants which revealed a qualitative mental difference (while the primate’s elementary thinking is based solely on the use of space-time relations, human thinking reveals cause-and-effect relationships). Compiled and analyzed much data on the use of tools by chimpanzees and on the constructive and imitative activities of primates and pre-school children.
