Studied art in a Moscow art school and was once a pupil of
Malevich. Probably met Fernand Leger in Moscow. Came to France in 1925 as an art student.
Became a teacher. Eventually married Leger. After his death in 1955, dedicated her time and energies to his heritage. Donated some 300 of his paintings to France.
These are now housed in a small museum in Biot, just north of Antibes. To celebrate his centenary, opened a new museum, La Maison de Fernand Leger, filled with his books, tapestries, mosaics and stained-glass windows. Tireless organizer of lectures and exhibitions on Leger.
Always maintained close relations with the Soviet authorities and is thought to have her own flat in Moscow. Entertains Soviet ambassadors, writers and artists in her house near Paris. Soviet diplomats in Paris call her ‘Svoi Paren’ v Parizhe’ (Our Fellow in Paris).
