Taher studied economics at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
In 2006, Forbes magazine ranked Taher 72nd in the list of the 100 Most Powerful Women in the World. She continued her studies at Lancaster University Management School in the United Kingdom, where she received her Master of Science in Economics in 1998, and Doctor of Philosophy in Economics in 2001. After completing her Doctor of Philosophy she returned to Saudi Arabia where she worked as senior economist for the National Commercial Bank.
In 2005 Taher was made Chief Executive Officer of Gulf One Investment Bank, becoming the first woman to lead a bank in the Gulf area.
