His treatise entitled "Both man and tobacco are known after they are burnt" which Nakayama Shuzo wrote on a shoji (paper sliding-door) was much appreciated by Sadanobu Matsudaira, a Minister of the Sioguyiate. Later, taking to himself the name of Butsuran, he wrote popular novels and gained a reputation for himself.
