She received an Bachelor from Smith College and Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the Johns Hopkins University.

She has taught courses on modern political thought, political theory and public policy, feminist political thought, gender and political theory, and contemporary political thought. Her most recent research is on the topic of disability in political theory.
She then became a member of the Cornell University faculty for 12 years before moving to the University of Pennsylvania as Graduate Chair in the Political Science department.
