Nanko Haruki was born in 1759.
He was a retainer of Sessai Maauyama, lord of the Nagashima Clan (Mie Prefecture). A man of high taste, he was skilled in painting pictures of the South School of China. While staying in Osaka as a follower of Sessai, he is said to have been deeply influenced by Kenkado Kimura. He went to Nagasaki (1788) and further improved his art by studying under Chinese painters.
