Gowdy received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1963 and a Master of Education degree in 1975 from Boston University. Then in 1982, she earned her Master of Divinity degree from Andover Newton Theological School.
Gowdy began her career as a teacher at Billerica Memorial High School in 1963. Three years later she held the same position at Belmont High School, where she worked until 1969.
Gowdy became an ordained minister in 1982. The same year she took a position of a minister at the 1st Congressional Society. In 1983, she was a minister at South Nassau Unitarian. Since 1988 Gowdy has been a minister at First Church Unitarian.
Nannene is a member of Unitarian Universalist Association.
Gowdy was a president of Interfaith Clergy Association from 1985 to 1988, Liberty Park Housing Development in 1986-1988. She was a treasurer at Interfaith National Network in 1985-1988.
On October 19, 1968 Nannene Gowdy married Alphonse Wright, with whom she divorced in 1983. They have 2 children.
