Naoharu Oshima was born in 1879 in Kagoshima, Japan.

He graduated from Philosophy Department of Tokyo University in 1905 and then studied at the Postgraduate Department of the same university.
He became lecturer at Hosei University and professor at 7th Higher School and then served as professor at Kyushu University (1924-39); he became honorary professor of the same university in 1936. Thereafter he served successively as lecturer at Kyushu Higher Medical School and Kyushu Medical College and director of Kokura Gai Semmon Gakko (College of Foreign Studies). He was appointed chairman of North Kyushu UNESCO Cooperation Conference in 1948.
