Harada Naojiro was born in 1863, in Tokyo, Japan. Second son of Kazumichi Harada, member of the House of Peers.

He studied oil painting under Yoshiichi Takahashi. Then he went to Germany in 1884 and studied under Gabriel Max in Munich.
Returning to Japan in 1887, Harada Naojiro opened an art school. Became famous for his painting of the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy riding a dragon which was displayed at an exposition in Tokyo in 1890. Although his method was Western, his subjects were taken from Japanese life.
