Background
His pen-name was Kun-en. His family engaged in messenger business and weaving. As the family business declined, he went to Edo and studied clas¬sics under Moribe Tachibana. Later he opened a private school at his home.

Career
Many lords and Shogunate retainers studied under him. He was devoted to the study of Manydshu, the oldest anthology of Japan and Japanese civilization since the Nara Period. Wrote many books on those subjects.
