Wounded, Selma, Alabama, April 2, 1865. Mayor of Cairo, Illinois, 1879-1883, 1897-1901.
Elected to 60th Congress to fill unexpired term of George West. Smith, deceased. Reëlected 61st and 62d Congresses (1909-1913), 25th Illinois District.
Defeated for reëlection, 1912.
