斉憲 上杉
Uesugi Narinori was born on June 20, 1820 in Yamagata, Japan.
Uesugi Narinori introduced Western arms and methods of warfare to his clan and introduced several reforms in his administration (1853-1857). He was received in Court by Emperor Komei in Kyoto, entrusted with the task of enforcing an antiforeign policy and designated chief guard of the Imperial capital (1868). He ruled Yonezawa during the closing years of the Tokugawa shogunate, and was responsible for leading the domain in its fight during the Boshin War of 1868-1869.
When news of disturbance reached him at Yonezawa Castle Uesugi Narinori set forth at the head of an army to defend Kyoto, but before he could reach there he heard of the Shogun's defeat. He then tried without avail to mediate between the Shogunate and the Imperial Court. Thereafter he sided with the Shogun and was stripped of his official rank. Later was pardoned and moved to Tokyo where he settled.
