(When eleven-year-old Wesley loses her father in a car acc...)
When eleven-year-old Wesley loses her father in a car accident, she and her mother must move in with her Aunt Cindy, an Australian shepherd breeder in Prince Edward County, Ontario. Life on a working farm is new to Wesley and she is lonely, confused, and angry at life's injustices as she struggles to fit into this new world. After watching the birth of a litter of puppies with her cousin Cassel, Wesley pleads with her aunt to save the life of a runt puppy that would otherwise be left to die. The puppy, an undersized red merle named Piper, proves to be a challenge from the start, with a natural talent for trouble as well as herding sheep. When Piper attacks a sheep during a herding competition, Wesley must fight once again to prove the dog's worth, and ultimately, her own. Through hard work and long hours, the dog and girl become inseparable and even stand a chance at the championship title. But on the eve of the big event, Piper and Wesley are set upon by marauding coydogs - coyotes crossed with wild dogs - and it is Piper who is called upon to save Wesley.

(Full of heart and humor, this coming-of-age tale is no sm...)
Full of heart and humor, this coming-of-age tale is no small thing - the tale of a boy's search for love and identity in the face of longing, abandonment, and uncertainty. When twelve-year-old Nathaniel and his two sisters discover an ad in the paper for a free pony, they can hardly believe their luck. But what will their mother say? Mom's been having a hard time ever since Dad walked out on them four years ago. But caring for a pony might keep Nat and his older sister, Cid, from bickering, and it would mean so much to eight-year-old Queenie.

(Boney, Itchy, and Squeak are the Odd Fellows, just a bit ...)
Boney, Itchy, and Squeak are the Odd Fellows, just a bit different from everybody else, and the best of friends. They hang out in their treehouse in Boney’s backyard, where five lookout posts and three escape hatches allow them to keep an eye on (and get away from) their mortal enemy: bully Larry Harry. But after getting pelted with eggs, pummelled in gym class, and sabotaged every year at their school’s Invention Convention, the Odds have had enough. They’re going to put an end to Larry’s reign of terror, and they’re going to use their knowledge of science and the local legend of a haunted mill to do so - if, that is, they don’t get tangled up in their own schemes first. Natale Ghent, award-winning and critically acclaimed author of No Small Thing and All the Way Home, returns with a hilarious story of friendship and comeuppance. The Odds Get Even perfectly captures the childhood spirit of secret plans and adventures while showing that being different isn’t such a bad thing.

(A smart and thoughtful story about self-discovery, accept...)
A smart and thoughtful story about self-discovery, acceptance, and finding friendship - all in the places you’d least expect. Sioux Smith is sharp, funny, and wry, and is pretty certain that she sees the world of high school differently from everyone else - a belief that is cemented when she makes an uneasy discovery about one of her school’s "popular" teachers. And while she feels alone at her high school and in her unique slant on small-town life, Sioux finds a kindred spirit in the most unlikely of people: an elderly stranger, who has more insight despite her progressing dementia than anyone else in Sioux’s life. What Sioux and "Miss Marple" learn about each other over tea, illicitly secreted wine, and Coronation Street makes for a novel with heart and grit in equal measure.

(Fans of the I, Freddy series and Charlotte's Web will be ...)
Fans of the I, Freddy series and Charlotte's Web will be won over by this charming, delightfully told, and illustrated story of a petshop misfit - a hairless guinea pig with a penchant for Shakespeare. Millhouse is a faint-hearted, hairless guinea pig. A great lover of all things theatrical, most especially the work of William Shakespeare, Milly longs for the limelight and someone to love. However, after the death of his beloved owner, the great actor Sir Roderick Lord Kingswagger, Millhouse is abandoned to a neglected and dusty pet shop filled with other rodents - some rude, some odd, some cute, and some downright frightening. Finding himself a reviled outcast and a target of the nasty Pepper Brown ferret, Millhouse sets about trying to find a way back to the theater and happy home, and in doing so experiences more drama than he could ever have imagined.

(Natale Ghent brings us an engrossing fantasy set in the n...)
Natale Ghent brings us an engrossing fantasy set in the near future about the war between two worlds and a girl pitted in the battle of good and evil. Seventeen-year-old Caddy is haunted by visions of global destruction. They come on like seizures, taking her to a desolate place where dispossessed souls struggle to be heard. It is one possible future - one she feels she must prevent. But in a world where food and money are scarce, and the struggle over resources between the continents is escalating toward war, Caddy has little hope. When her father goes missing, she searches for him and is abducted into a cabalistic society called The Dreamers - visionaries who "dream" to sustain the light against the dark energies that threaten to take over the planet. Caddy is shepherded into society by a high school classmate called Poe, and through him, uncovers long-hidden truths about herself and her father.

Natale Ghent was born in 1962, in Brookfield, Illinois, United States. Born in Illinois, Ghent moved to the Canadian countryside when she was seven.
Natale graduated from the University of Guelph in 1992, earning a Bachelor of Arts. She also attended the University of California San Diego.
Natale Ghent is an author and journalist. She has been writing stories since she was six. Her first books, written and illustrated, revolved around a family of circles: a momma circle, a papa circle, and two baby circles. The momma circle wore a fur stole, distinguishing herself from the papa circle, who wore a fedora, naturally. Natale graduated from writing about circles to writing and illustrating stories about a small fairy, and later, to stories about talking guinea pigs and eventually humans.
Piper, Ghent's first novel, was published in 2001. Piper follows the story of eleven-year-old Wesley, whose father dies, forcing Wesley and her mother to move in with her Aunt Cindy who lives on a farm. Life on a working farm is new to Wesley and she is lonely, confused, and angry at life's injustices as she struggles to fit into this new world. Through hard work and long hours, the dog and girl become inseparable and even stand a chance at the championship title.
In No Small Thing, the author's second work for children, an ad in the local newspaper changes the life of twelve-year-old Nathaniel and his family. Nathaniel is trying to cope with a younger sister who is a bit odd, an older sister with whom he is always fighting, and the loss of his father, who left the family. After reading an ad for a free pony, Nathaniel convinces his mother to let him take it. Subsequently, Nathaniel - and his family - embark on a journey of self-discovery.
Ghent's other works include Book Of Living And Dying (2005), All The Way Home (2006), Gravity Brings Me Down (2009), Against All Odds (2011), Dark Company (2015).
Natale Ghent is an award-winning journalist and author. Her critically acclaimed work has gathered awards and recognition internationally. Natale's No Small Thing was nominated for four Canadian children's choice awards, including the CLA Book of the Year for Children Award and the Silver Birch award (Honour Book). It was also chosen as a Junior Library Guild Selection in the United States and a Borders Original Voice.
