Coughlin attended St. Catherine of Siena School in Vallejo and then Carondelet High School in Concord, California. While in high school in 1998, she became the first swimmer to qualify for the Summer National in all fourteen events. Coughlin graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in psychology in the spring of 2005.
At the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004 Coghlin won five Olympic medals: 2 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze. At the same time, she set one Olympic record, one world record and one US record.
In 2008 at the Beijing Olympics she was selected as co-captain of the U.S. women's swimming team In Beijing Natalie received one gold medal (100 meters backstroke), two silver and three bronze.
In April 2009, Coughlin married Ethan Hall, the Crow Canyon Sharks swim coach. On October 16, 2018, their daughter, Zennie Mae Hall, was born. Later In October 2020, was born their son, Ozzy Hall.
