Natalie Honeycutt was born on February 5, 1945, in Washington, District of Columbia, United States. She is the daughter of Linwood Benjamin Honeycutt and Phyllis Arlene Cooley. Honeycutt was the second of five daughters. She grew up in Bethesda, Maryland, and by the fifth grade, she had fallen in love— with reading.
Honeycutt attended the University of Maine and California State University at San Francisco.
Honeycutt devoted her career to writing. Since 1980, she works as a freelance writer, living in California.
Her quartet of books for middle-grade readers, all based in the same third-grade classroom and featuring recurring characters: Jonah Twist, his buddy, Granville, perfect, bossy Juliet Fisher, and the untidy but enthusiastic Lydia Jane. These characters and their adventures have been featured in The All New Jonah Twist, The Best-Laid Plans of Jonah Twist, Juliet Fisher and the Foolproof Plan, and Lydia Jane and the Babysitter Exchange, the first two of which have earned awards for Honeycutt.
Honeycutt has also written for both younger and older readers with Whistle Home, a picture book, and a novel Ask Me Something Easy for young adults. Honeycutt is credited with fast-moving stories which usually involve multi-layered plots, for her fine delineation of character, and her vivid details which bring her stories to life.
