Jewish rights movement. Came into conflict with the Committee for State Security. Took up the cases of Jewish refuseniks, and passed a list of names to American helpers.
Accused of espionage and high treason. Spent nearly a decade as a Gulag prisoner. Released thanks to the efforts of his wife Avital’ (Natasha) and the pressure of worldwide public opinion.
Lives in Israel, where he has become a national hero. Continues his fight for the release of those who are still imprisoned in the USSR for their convictions.
