Excerpt from Retroversion in Relation to Lacerations of the Cervix Uteri, Etc Since I first adopted this plan of treatment, now nearly seven years ago, I have relieved a number of most unprom ising cases, such I am sure as could not have been cured by the use of the uterine sound and the stem pessary. These were cases in which one or both ovaries were imprisoned and unduly compressed, chiefly by the supplementing force residing in the rectum. These are the cases which more frequently than any others suggest the performance of the bloody operation of normal ovariotomy first proposed a few years ago by Dr. Robert Battey, of Georgia. A large proportion of cases which have entered my ser vice at the Woman's Hospital, of the State of New York. This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(Excerpt from On Kolpokleisis and Other Allied Procedures ...)
Excerpt from On Kolpokleisis and Other Allied Procedures as Means of Treating Vesico-Vaginal Fistule: Being an Answer to the Article of the Late Prof. Gustave Simon, of Heidelberg, Entitled "a Comparison of Bozeman's Operations With That of the Author" Now, to complete a reply to the translation as found published in the Obstetrical Journal of Great Britain and Ireland, con taining none of the wood cuts of Profesor Simon, and to introduce those necessary to illustrate my own views, as I propose to do in the second part of my reply, would be a manifest injustice to him and his operation, which I wish to avoid. The importance of this point will readily appear to all, when it is recollected that the review and criticisms of Professor Simon extend to my operations in the General ospital at Vienna as well as to those at eidelberg; and that in defence of the positions I have assumed, it will be as necessary for me to refer to the former as well as to the latter. Besides this, Professor Simon, before com mehoing his review and criticisms, addressed a note to Dr. Beigel, of Vienna,' in which he not only draws a comparison between his and my methods of Operating, but between mine and that of Dr. Sims, which was made a pretext by Dr. B. Through the Wiener Medizinische Wochenschrift to try to destroy the favorable impression made by my Operations in Vienna, so ably reported by Dr. Ludwig Band, and to lug in side issues disparaging to my former labors at home and abroad, evidently intending by it to counteract the effects of the stun ning blow already given by me to Professor Simon's theory of kolpokleisis, and thus to bring into favor in the Austrian capital the method of Dr. Sims, but little known and appreciated there. Nathan Bozeman was born on March 25, 1825, in Butler County, Alabama. He was the son of Nathan and Harriet (Knotts) Bozeman and was of Dutch descent.
Nathan Bozeman studied medicine at the University of Louisville, graduating in 1848.
Nathan Bozeman began practise in Montgomery, Alabama, where he became intimately acquainted with Marion Sims and his work. It was at that time that Sims first succeeded in curing vesico-vaginal fistula, a problem on which the gynecologists of Europe and America had worked for years without arriving at a solution.
Bozeman took great interest in this question. He improved Sims's method by substituting the "button" or "shot" suture for Sims's clamp suture; this was a great advance as the new suture practically eliminated failures. In 1859, Bozeman for the first time performed colpocleisis as a means of treating vesico-vaginal fistula. In the same year, he made a trip to Europe demonstrating his methods. On his return, he settled in New Orleans but soon the Civil War broke out and Bozeman served during the whole four years as a surgeon in the Confederate Army. After the war, he settled in New York, where he established a private hospital for women.
In 1868, he was attacked by Prof. Simon of Heidelberg on a question of priority concerning the operation of colpocleisis. He at once crossed the Atlantic to defend his position by demonstrating his own method before the medical faculty of Heidelberg.
In 1878, he was appointed surgeon to the New York State Women's Hospital. The work being too heavy, he resigned this position in 1888 and established a private sanitarium.
He died of apoplexy, December 16, 1905.
