Baily was born on July 19, 1920, in New York City, New York, United States to the family of Saul and Eleanor (Mintz) Baily.
A brilliant student, Nathan Ariel Baily earned the highest grades as a junior at City College (now part of the City University of New York system) and won the Pell Gold Medal for his efforts. He graduated from City College in 1940 and was made a teaching fellow there while he worked on his master’s degree at Columbia University. Nathan completed the university in 1941. In 5 years he received a Ph.D.
Nathan Ariel Baily started his career as a senior editor and economic analyst at the Research Institute of America. That was followed by a stint at the Office of Price Administration in Washington, D.C. Later, in 1947, Baily joined the faculty at American University, where he taught until 1973 and became the founding dean of the School of Business Administration.
Nathan Ariel Baily continued his career path as commissioner of the Postal Rate Commission and was its chief economist from 1974 to 1975. During the late 1970s, Baily took on the role of president of consulting companies such as Seminars, Speakers, Travel, and Utility Shareholders Associations, which he led from 1976 to 1979. He also directed a number of corporations in Washington, D.C.
In the 1980s Baily became a visiting professor at Nova University and George Washington University and was the editor of Marketing Profitability under the Robinson-Patman Act. Besides, Baily himself became the author of two works: Marketing Handbook and Guide to Establishing a Company Marketing Program.
Nathan Ariel Baily married Judith Bernstein on June 20, 1946. They had two children: Alan Eric and Lawrence Joel.
