Background

Peabody, Nathaniel was born on March 12, 1742 in Topsfield, Massachusetts, United States. Son of Jacob and Susanna (Rogers) Peabody.

Education

Studied medicine privately with father.

Career

Began practice of medicine, N.H., 1761. Justice of peace Rockingham County N.H.), 1771. Commissioned lieutenant colonel British Army, resigned to enter Continental Army, 1774.

A leader at capture Fort William and Mary, New Castle, N.H., (one of 1st open acts of America Revolution), 1774. Member, later chairman N.H. Committee of Safety, 1776. Member N.H. House of Representatives, 1776-1779, 81-85, 87-90, 93-96, speaker, 1793.

Adjutant general N.H. Militia, 1777, participated in Rhode Island expedition, 1778. Delegate from N.H. to Continental Congress, 1779-1780. Member N.H. constitutional convs., 1781-1783, 91-92, Chairman of Commission to draft N.H. Constitution, 1782-1783.

Member N.H. Senate, 1785, 86, 90-93, chosen to serve as councilor (member Government's Council) from N.H. House of Representatives, 1784, from N.H. Senate, 1785. An organizer N.H. Medical Society, 1791. Major general N.H. Militia, 1793-1798.

Spent last 20 years of life in debtor’s prison.
