Excerpt from The Spiritual Drama in the Life of Thackeray George IV and Victoria. At least, we shall come to a conclusion as to what they signify to the century now beginning. We shall decide what part of their endeavour we wish to take up and carry forward, what part we wish to abjure. Every literary epoch becomes, at last, a residue of itself that enters as leaven into the age beyond. It is well, in the present case, to enquire What part of the leaven is good, what bad. (Excerpt from A School History of the United States This ...)
Excerpt from A School History of the United States This book is intended for use in the upper grammar grades and in the junior high school. Its authors have borne in mind the double fact that While American schools still retain - it is to be hoped will always retain - a wholesome variety in their detail of instruction, they are nevertheless approaching a national conformity in main features. Espe cially is this true in history. The time for a school course in American history truly nationalized, broadly speaking, both in matter and method has arrived. The recent discussions of the subject in the National Education Association, in the American Historical Association, and by a host of individual critics have cleared the atmosphere as never before. The World War has worked as a powerful solvent to precipitate a new consensus of opinion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. (Arguably the most written-about man, from the most writte...)
Arguably the most written-about man, from the most written-about era in American History, Abraham Lincoln is still largely unknown to most people. His life, his actions, and the world in which he lived we not simple. He was wrong as often as he was right, perhaps more so. Every biography about him is also wrong; Stephenson wrote an engaging, detailed, and well-researched biography of Lincoln; he pulls from sources both reliable and close to Lincoln, and in doing ensures that the facts are well-considered. If Stephenson's book suffers significantly, it is in the conclusion drawn from those facts, motives attributed to others not fully supported by the evidence, and an us-versus-them mentality that set Lincoln apart from others in his political circle, an over-simplification of the true picture. That being said, since all biographies are wrong and all pictures of a life are incomplete, this book add a dimension seldom seen in the life of Lincoln. Whether reading about Lincoln for the first time, or studying him in depth, Stephenson's Lincoln is a worthy addition to the vast treasure of work on our 16th President.

(LINCOLN AND BOOTH – two men on a collision course, a fate...)
LINCOLN AND BOOTH – two men on a collision course, a fate that changed the character of the world for all time. A person cannot understand the death of Lincoln without knowing someone of the life of Booth, and Booth himself would have little meaning to history if not for the life of Lincoln. It is only fitting that biographies of both be published together. This does not suggest that John Wilkes Booth has a reputation, important, or value to history equal to that of the 16th President – but, as the facts of his life are lesser known, he needs to be described. Stephenson's biography of Lincoln is not perfect – some of his conclusions don't match the objective view of the evidence looking back over the decades. Still his personal attachment to the subject and his access to materials that have been since lost to time, make his a valuable addition to our knowledge of the 16th – and perhaps greatest – president. THE LIFE, CRIME, AND CAPTURE OF JOHN WILKES BOOTH: “The time will come when remarkable incidents of these our times will be a staple of as great curiosity as the issue of Waterloo. It is an incident without a precedent on this side of the globe, and never to be repeated. “Assassination has made its last effort to become indigenous here. The public sentiment of Loyalist and Rebel has denounced it: the world has remarked it with uplifted hands and words of execration. Therefore, as long as history shall hold good, the murder of the President will be a theme for poesy, romance and tragedy. We who live in this consecrated time keep the sacred souvenirs of Mr. Lincoln's death in our possession; and the best of these are the news letters descriptive of his apotheosis, and the fate of the conspirators who slew him. “I represented the World newspaper at Washington during the whole of those exciting weeks, and wrote their occurrences fresh from the mouths of the actors.”

educator historian journalist writer
Nathaniel was born on July 10, 1867 in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States, a son of Reuben Henry and Louisa (Wright) Stephenson, descendants of early settlers who came chiefly from New England.
Prevented by financial difficulties from entering college until his twenty-first year, young Stephenson spent one year at the University of Cincinnati, then two years at Harvard, but it was 1896 before he was able to complete the requirements for the bachelor's degree at Indiana University, where, at the time, he was filling an appointment (1895 - 97) as instructor in English.
Stephenson taught one session (1891 - 92) in the English department of the State University of Iowa and had worked (1893 - 95) as a reporter and editorial writer on the Cincinnati Daily Tribune.
In 1898 he returned to the Tribune, then known as the Commercial Tribune, as literary editor, but this connection was terminated two years later, possibly because he intended to devote himself to a career of independent writing.
In 1902, however, under the influence of Lancelot M. Harris, one of his former Indiana colleagues who was then teaching at the College of Charleston, he decided to accept the professorship of history and economics in the latter institution, and, after a year spent in recruiting his health, he undertook the task of teaching both European and American history as well as certain introductory courses in economics and political science.
Later, for a brief period (1919 - 20), he served as acting president of the college. In one of his later works (An Autobiography of Abraham Lincoln) Stephenson acknowledged an indebtedness to his Harvard teacher, Albert Bushnell Hart, for training in historical method, but, with the exception of a novel, They That Took the Sword (1901), dealing with the Civil War period in Cincinnati, his early writings do not reveal any interest in history per se. Two novels, The Beautiful Mrs. Moulton (1902) and Eleanor Dayton (1903), and a critical essay, The Spiritual Drama in the Life of Thackeray (1913), were concerned with the psychological and esthetic, rather than the materialistic, forces which govern human conduct. Indeed, it may be said that in finally turning to historical writing he was seeking primarily a vehicle better suited to his ability to express these humanistic interests.
In 1920 he was invited to lecture at Yale University. He returned the following year to the College of Charleston, but in 1922 he accepted the position of editor of the Chronicles of America Photoplays which for a time permitted him also to teach at Columbia University.
His ashes were taken to Summerville, South Carolina, for burial.
In addition to numerous articles prepared for historical journals Nathaniel Wright Stephenson was the author of three famous textbooks: An American History (1913) for high schools, A School History of the United States (1921) for the grammar grades, and A History of the American People (1934) for college students. History brought Stephenson the recognition which he had not succeeded in gaining through imaginative writing.
