Graduate Berdyansk high school. Studied at Novorossiysk University.
In youth joined Chyomyy peredel (Black Redistribution) organisation and was member and propagandist, South Russian Workers’ Union, Odessa. 1881 arrested; 22 November 1882 sentenced by military tribunal to 10 years at hard labor in Kara. Took part in a prisoners’ protest.
Then tried to commit suicide. 1892 resettled in Yakutsk Oblast, began to study life of Yakuts and contributed to newspapers. 1895 took part in Sibiryakov expedition.
Then worked for newspapers Vostochnoye obozreniye, Irkutsk, and Odessltiye novosti, Odessa. Contributed to central journals.
